After cleaning: the same kitchen from the same doorway in the same overcast morning light. The sink is empty and the stainless polished dry, the counter is clear and wiped with the coffee rings gone, the gas hob and grates are degreased, the fridge door is streak-free, the floor is swept and mopped, the towel is hung on the oven handle and the bin has a fresh liner. The cabinets keep their chipped paint and the counter its worn edge. — AfterKitchen

After cleaning: the same bathroom from the same doorway in the same flat midday light. The shower door glass is now clear enough to read the green tile behind it, the chrome shower head, taps and door frame are descaled and polished, the tub is white with the drain staining and grime ring gone, the mirror and sink are spotless, the floor grout is noticeably lighter, the towel is folded on the rail and the bin is empty. The tile is still vintage and the radiator still wears its thick old paint. — AfterBathroom

After cleaning: the same emptied room from the same doorway in the same bright late-morning light. The oak floor is swept, vacuumed and mopped so the dust film and lint around the furniture outlines are gone, the dust bunnies are cleared from the baseboards and corners, the scuff and drag marks are scrubbed off the wall, and the hanger and packing paper are removed. The unfaded rectangles where pictures hung and the small nail holes are still there, because cleaning does not repaint. — AfterMove-out

After cleaning: the same room from the same doorway in the same midday light. The drywall dust is gone so the walls read true matte rather than chalky, the plywood subfloor is vacuumed and wiped with the drifted powder, footprints and swirl marks removed and the grain reading clearly, the window glass and sill are washed so daylight comes through crisp instead of milky, and the offcuts, dust mask, tape, paper sheet and ladder are cleared. The room is still an unfinished renovation, with the same unpainted drywall, joint-compound patches, exposed wiring box and ceiling opening. — AfterPost-construction

After cleaning: the same basement from the same angle under the same bare bulb. The lint is stripped from the dryer and vent hose, the joists, pipes and window are brushed clear of dust and cobwebs so the glass block reads bright green again, the laundry is folded into the baskets and stacked on the table, the detergent is reduced to two jugs, the hose is stowed on the shelving and the concrete floor is swept and mopped with the drain surround scrubbed. The flaking wall paint, the efflorescence and the dented old machines are all still there. — AfterBasement laundry

After cleaning: the same dining room from the same doorway in the same flat overcast daylight. The table is cleared and wiped so the oak reads clean, the purple juice stain has been lifted out of the runner and off the table edge, every crumb is gone from the tabletop and from the floor around and under the chairs, the chairs are pushed in square, the sideboard is dusted so its grain reads clearly with the finger streaks gone, and a single plain bowl sits centred on the table. The floor still shows its worn traffic path and the trim its old paint. — AfterDining room

After cleaning: the same home office from the same doorway in the same soft window light. The papers are collected into two squared stacks with the floor spill cleared, the mugs and plate are gone and the dark coffee rings scrubbed off the wood, the cables are bundled out of sight, and the dust is gone everywhere: the monitor screen and bezel are wiped streak-free, the keyboard is clean, the shelf edges and book tops are dusted with no finger streaks left, the radiator fins are clear and the rug is vacuumed. The wastebasket is empty. The desk keeps its scratches and the chair its wear. — AfterHome office

After cleaning: the same powder room from the same doorway in the same flat light. The hard-water scale is dissolved off the spout and both cross handles so the chrome is polished bright, the mirror is spotless with the toothpaste spatter gone, the sink bowl is white with the grimy ring and the rust-brown mineral streak removed, the toilet is cleaned inside and out and the tank top dusted, the switch plate is wiped, the hand towel is folded on its chrome ring, the bin is empty and the penny tile floor is mopped so the grout reads noticeably lighter. The tile keeps its fine vintage crazing. — AfterPowder room
